A concept book by a photographer who has drawn attention, published in 2009 as a revised and expanded edition of Nao Tsuda's first book, which came out in 2004 with hiromiyoshii. Unpublished work is added and interwoven with words written during the making; one line reads that he was walking on a lake whose frozen surface was hard as stone and shining, and that there was no map. The critic Mariko Takeuchi describes it as tracing the events of a day through combined photographs, faster than one photograph and slower than one film. Coming Closer was a kind of study for the landscape work he would develop fully in Smoke Line, published by Akaaka in 2008. In his books Tsuda often shows the viewer multiple views of the same scene, taken from a similar perspective. Where Smoke Line is large and colourful, Coming Closer is almost miniature, a more playful effort. The book opens with a sequence of colour photographs printed on glossy paper, but most of it consists of black-and-white photographs printed on matte stock. The small format means that Tsuda's landscapes are not at all grandiose, and seeing three or four of them together on one spread makes for a strangely pleasant viewing experience.
