For the seventh instalment of Baron, the photographer Richard Kern explores the dichotomy between girl and woman, between the nude and the dressed, and between playfulness and seriousness. Kern neither directs nor casts his subjects: they contact him and pose in any way they are comfortable, sometimes choosing to be nude and keeping full control of how their bodies are photographed, so that each image is a collaboration between model and photographer. The portraits are layered on top of each other, veiling and unveiling the body, and look at the last stage of innocence, the uncertain phase between childhood and adulthood in which doubts and joys show on the faces. The power dynamic between an older man and young women, shaped by the male gaze yet expressing the subjects' agency over their sexuality, is left open to question. The issue continues Kern's ongoing research on the portrayal of girlhood.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
