A critical essay in dialogue form: four years of conversation between the photographer Naoya Hatakeyama and the writer Akiko Otake after the Great East Japan Earthquake: how is a photographer drawn into events beyond human control, and what hope does he find for the future? (The title means Events and Photography.) Hatakeyama, who had long represented the relationship between city, nature and people in his pictures, found the overwhelming 'event' becoming his subject when his hometown Rikuzentakata was struck; he kept returning, photographing a reality that changed by the day, thinking all the time and changing himself. The conversations began in November 2011 and ran for four years with ups and downs. Through questions about chance events, people and photography, the underlying question of what photography is crossed genres to art, history and many other phenomena. The contents include the exhibition Natural Stories, the resolve to offer one's own body, the feeling in the moment of pointing the camera at a ruined hometown, the idea that photography has no ethics, the way a photograph pulls its maker away from the scene, giving up the notion of individual expression, how to deal with finding pictures of a disaster area beautiful, and the thought that photographs are taken for the future.
