In the Shingal mountains of north-western Iraq, the people called Yazidis live in harmony with nature, protecting their own religion and traditions, passed down from generation to generation: women bake bread in earthen ovens before dawn, and at sunrise the inhabitants pray facing the sun. On 3 August 2014 Daesh (Islamic State) attacked Yazidi villages and towns in Shingal; it is believed that about 5,000 Yazidis were killed and a further 6,000 abducted, and women were subjected to sexual, physical and psychological violence. The book portrays the stories of Yazidis in Iraq and in Germany who fled their homeland after the siege and massacre, and touches on trauma, identity and collective memory. It is a compilation of photographs and personal testimonies written in Japanese, English, German and Kurdish.
