A family portrait made over years of visits home. The photographer was raised by four women: his mother, his grandmother and two aunts who never married. His mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was a teenager and became, almost overnight, a different person, as if the history of her life had been erased; since then she has gone back and forth between home and hospital, and the only proof of who she had been is the photographs from before her illness. When his grandmother, the real mother figure of the household, died when he was 28, he became acutely aware of how much time had gone by unnoticed, and from then on photographed his family on every trip back to Japan. The best days became the short trips he made around Japan with his mother and her two sisters. At a time when people still hesitate to speak about mental illness and social support is hard to find, he decided to record the time and space he shared with his family, exploring the universal themes of family, ageing and the passage of time. The photographs let him travel between past and present, make up for memories the family never had and accept the changes that have happened and those still to come.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
