Art direction by Masakazu Onishi
Published after the exhibition of the same name at sendai mediatheque at the end of 2016 and the start of 2017, which drew wide attention, the book opens the record and the possibilities of that show from the middle of photographs (124 pages) and words (124 pages). The photograph section includes the long-awaited early series Contour Lines, a rare work that the artist says he might never have shown in this form anywhere but sendai mediatheque, precious contact sheets, and works from various series made over thirty years, together with photographs the artist himself took of the exhibition views, a composition that sends our bodies, wandering through the space of each photograph, back to the question of the origin of landscape. The text section contains transcripts of conversations held during the exhibition with the poet Mikiro Sasaki, the manga artist Mikio Igarashi and the photographer Lieko Shiga, and a contribution by Takahiro Nishimura (clinical philosophy). Crossing the duality and ambiguity of landscape, it brings out that landscape is not simply something that was there but is born anew each time people compose a song, paint a picture or take a photograph: a supple, large question to our society, civilisation and life, beyond an unprecedented event.
