Art direction by Hikari Machiguchi
A photobook by Antoine d'Agata, who sets out his method as one of fervent objection to the photographic forms accepted until now: the camera's capacity to record, to report and interpret, produces arbitrary arrangements of fragmented perspectives, and the neutrality of the documentary photographer is a sham that reduces the truth of a situation and shirks responsibility to the subject. His photography, an unfinished narrative of brief and innocent interactions with the world without sociological or aesthetic finality, strives to reveal the rawness of both the flesh and the photographic medium and subordinates point of view to experience. To subvert the real is to disturb the order of things and to document his existence in the world, a brutal relationship that upends the limits between art and life and demands absolute commitment, physical and mental. The text includes an activity log (Tarot, Paris, January 2006) that maps chance onto the arrangement of future events, from The Wheel of Fortune to The Card With No Name, the long waiting for death, and speaks of a never-ending cycle of violence and compassion, survival strategies far removed from morals, extreme pleasure and drug-induced ecstasy: beyond fear lies desire, and the only escape is the other.
