Photographs made over three years from 2015 across the 26 cities, towns and villages of Kyoto Prefecture, where the sources of Japanese culture still pulse in the Sea of Kyoto, the Forest of Kyoto and the Tea of Kyoto. Amid the transformations brought by the times, they capture lives and people rooted in the land, which continue to this day. The book moves through the Tango Peninsula, where immigrants from the continent once spread rice cultivation; the rich fishing grounds of the Sea of Japan; Miyazu and Amanohashidate, the path of the gods; Yosano and Ayabe, made prosperous by chirimen crepe; and the timber of Miyama and Kitayama, carried down the Yura, Katsura and Hozu rivers to meet the tea of Uji, from which a culture unique to Kyoto was born. The title, which can be read as for demons and for fortune, evokes changes that seem at once ogre and blessing, and a large question breathes through the pictures: what do we choose, and where are we heading?

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
