Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Alessandro Silverj (Italy), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The book tells the story of Margherita, known as Madregna, who on 29 August 1523 was accused of witchcraft and subjected to rope torture. In fear of further agony she confessed to practising sorcery and taking part in a sabbath; she was condemned and burned alive at the stake, and her property was confiscated and redistributed according to the customs and privileges upheld by the Inquisition. Through archival and contemporary images, the book traces how this violence still echoes in the present. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
