Photobook dummy by Yogan Muller (France), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. JPM is a posthumous collaboration with the photographer's late Algerian father, a former press photographer for Agence France-Presse, who died unexpectedly in February 2022 in Toulouse. The book sublimates his life, from war-torn Algiers in the 1950s to the AFP headquarters in Paris, at the pinnacle of his photojournalism career in the 2000s. He had always existed at a distance, and his son knew little about his dreams, struggles and victories. When the son re-entered the house in July 2022 it resembled a landfill, and his father's archive was no different. Working like an editor unafraid of radical choices, he let relationships form between bodies of work, and photographed the Toulouse neighbourhoods where his father grew up and lived, pondering displacement and fractured roots. The dummy was conceived, designed and produced within the Penumbra Foundation's 2024 Long-Term Program for photobooks; it weaves distinct photographic registers into a narrative of grief, memory and fractured roots, and introduces the levity his father was looking for but never managed to bring into his life. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.
