Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Uschi Groos (Germany), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The book examines power, the abuse of power and drugs through the example of Pervitin, crystal meth, in the Nazi regime, and shows how hysteria and intoxication shaped decisions. It asks how such patterns still influence political and individual decision-making today and what consequences they have for control and action. The work combines traditional printmaking, the 250-year-old technique of lithography, whose manual, physical nature contrasts with the digital world and gives the images the weight of the stone, with digital photographs of historical places: the Wolf's Lair, the bunkers in Normandy and the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, silent witnesses of an intoxicated pursuit of power. Pervitin, a methamphetamine, was a driving force behind the Blitzkrieg, pushing soldiers to inhuman endurance and blurring moral boundaries. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
