Art direction by Yuta Nakajima
A photo-essay collection by Kousei Saeki, born in 1949 in Ehime, of photographs and writing from the turbulent late 1960s and the 1970s, in which photography is a means of reading the world and of taking it on. Having come to Tokyo as a student, he spent those years in Ikebukuro and Shinjuku and began to make evidence photographs of landscapes, people and the time they lived, exposed to a rapidly changing age: Okinawa under American occupation, the guilt of being implicated in the Vietnam War, clashes between students and riot police, the Sanrizuka struggle. To photograph is to be photographed: the act itself creates a relation with the world and records the photographer's own gaze, position and distance. He then travelled to an anguished America of the 1970s, photographing the Indian boy guru Maharaj in Houston and the Amish of Lancaster living with nature, quiet events that gave him a hint for facing the world.
