A culmination by a photographer who has long sought photographs that bridge documentary and expression through repeated reporting at sites of natural history, zoology and medicine: going into the details of bone and flesh to look for traces of the memory of life. People cannot see their own bones and organs directly; led by an inner mystery, Naruaki Onishi was fascinated by the reality tied to life and by the beauty of natural forms, and kept photographing bones, the memory of bone carved since vertebrates appeared 500 million years ago. Through astonishment at the foetal body that embodies this memory he has also stood at sites of ageing, illness and death. The concreteness of flesh melts, the abstraction of bone appears with a hint of mineral, one life returning to the cosmos: an epic that crosses bone and flesh with light and faces the mystery of life and the darkness of being, with the question of where we come from and where we are going.
