Photographs of 100 classmates born in 1977 at work, by Makoto Yasumori, born in the same year. Monks, civil servants, fishermen, nursery teachers, flautists, restaurateurs, young innkeepers: classmates of every profession face the camera in their workplaces, at the same distance and in a hundred similar poses, and small differences in how they stand, fold their hands and look emerge and let their days seep through. His own experience of graduating into the employment ice age was the trigger for the series, but beyond the type that tells its age, restrained portraits of each person's existence and daily life emerged. The book ends with a questionnaire answered by the hundred.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
