Japanese festivals in the dark, things born from a transforming space: the series in which Kisei Kobayashi has photographed rituals and festivals all over Japan, at last in one book, in the vein of A Boat from Afar, which won the 22nd Hayashi Tadahiko Award. About forty festivals, from well-known ones to strange local ones kept secret, appear in the darkness as figures that look not quite human, a crossing of festival and reality and an urge that goes back into the depths of sensation. Bodies seen and hidden among rocks, nudes on a night beach, the shadows of costumes waiting for their turn, figures at the border between consciousness and unconsciousness, profane and sacred, shown at life size. Tunnels and views from speeding cars recur, giving the feeling of a gaze moving through space, a passage into another world, with the back of a bus flashing back. Over about six years he followed some forty festivals, mostly held in the dark and sometimes all night, where a strange sensation always overcame him.
