Art direction by Alex Sonderegger and Susanna Baer
The first photobook by Kentaro Takahashi, about the Life Drawing Case of 1941, when art students of the Asahikawa teachers' school were arrested by the Special Higher Police, seen through the present lives of two of those involved. Photographs of Ryoichi Hishiya (98) and Goro Matsumoto (99), art students in wartime Hokkaido, and of Hiroshi Miyata (82), who keeps investigating the case, are set against pictures and materials of the past that they kept in their archives. Now that the anti-terror conspiracy law has been enacted, the book looks, from the viewpoint of everyday life, at two men arrested for nothing more than drawing, under the Peace Preservation Law, and asks in its quiet pages what it shows about our own situation and daily life.
