A record of light by people who tried to save the many photographs and albums damaged by disaster, in an enlarged edition of a book long out of stock. About a month after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 11 March 2011 the editor Satoshi Fujimoto and the photographer Masashi Asada went to the stricken area as volunteers, saw muddy photographs and the people who simply kept washing them, and for two years reported on how such cleaning arose spontaneously along the Tohoku coast so that the know-how could be shared. More than a record of reconstruction, the book prints in earnest words and photographs the irreplaceable power of albums and the people who believe in it and hand it on to the future. The enlarged edition adds the work done after the heavy rains of western Japan in 2018 in Mabi, Kurashiki, and was one of the origins of the film Asada Family.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
