The first work in about twenty years by Yasuko Kotani, who exhibited and won awards in the 1990s before a long pause from around 2000. Loss after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in Kobe, ageing, illness, stress and harassment swirl in this gloom; at the end of personal pain and silence she took up the self-portrait again. Blue is a special colour for her, as in her earlier series Blue Destruction and Fragments of Blue. Behind the leaden gloom there are rock walls, deep cracks in caves and circulating water, and nude bodies that squirm, fold, fall and seem to fly. Now shooting multiple exposures with a digital camera, she conveys complex folds vividly with delicate blur and contrast, after a long time facing the camera and looking into herself. Abstract blue, a universal presence released from a spirit sunk and wandering.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
