A journey around the sea of Nagasaki, the home of the photographer Motonari Tagawa: 81 landscapes and portraits on medium-format film, seen from the sea towards the island where he grew up, Matsushima off the Nishisonogi Peninsula, in waters with some 600 islands, just over 70 of them inhabited, and the Goto Islands in the distance. People who live from the sea and the faiths rooted in the land, Catholicism, hidden Christians, Buddhism and Shinto, the sea road along which peoples, cultures and religions have arrived since ancient times, put together in the manner of an American road trip. Having left his island at fifteen, Tagawa looks back at the sea in front of him, and the photographs wake memories that drift in it and are carved on the land: the dead, the will of ancestors, the memory of a place. An afterword on the sea of Nagasaki and his own life and a separate booklet of shooting notes with interviews and essays add about 19,000 characters of text.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
