Book design by Akiyoshi Miyake
Photographs of the traces of demolished houses left on the outer walls of neighbouring buildings in Kyoto, most of them the outline of a gable roof, gathered while walking the city by the Kyoto photographer Akiyoshi Miyake in homage to the typologies of the Bechers. Outlines of houses, corrugated-iron walls whose expression changes startlingly, windows appearing in odd places, cracks, soot-darkened colours and nearby signs: no two traces are alike, and each suggests the lives once lived there and how buildings related to one another. Like fossils of past lives they are exposed to rain and wind, and vanish when a new building rises or the wall is demolished, disappearing from memory without a trace. An epigraph from Kamo no Chomei's Hojoki about the river that flows without cease sets the tone of a valuable record of walking the city and a prompt to architectural discoveries and depth in looking.
