Essay by Saburo Kawamoto
Book design by Kensuke Sakakibara
About 70 photographs chosen from the work of Kazuma Saeki, the leading photographer of fireworks, who has photographed them in Japan and abroad since 1987 and, qualified in pyrotechnics since 1997, calls himself a hanabist. Fireworks go up 365 days a year, not only at summer festivals but at New Year countdowns, snow festivals and even at the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, set against riverbanks at sunset, a crescent moon, festival stalls and town lights, in delicate colours that answer the seasons. He dares to choose conventional film cameras to bring out the charm of analogue film, and with no multiple exposure he releases a single shutter to capture the very moment the sparks glitter. The book closes with an essay by Saburo Kawamoto on fireworks, fleeting and beautiful.
