Photographs made between 1996 and 2000 by inri (born 1973), before she began to work as the duo RongRong & inri, gathered under the single theme of love. The four series of Symposion are, in the curator Michiko Kasahara's words, all self-portraits of a young woman whether or not she appears in them, made in fin-de-siecle Tokyo after the bubble burst, in a mood of apocalypse, when she discovered the dance company H Art Chaos and its lead dancer Naoko Shirakawa and understood that if photography were art she would have to be its agent. A potted cactus kept since she began living alone in Tokyo, onto which she projects herself and whose yearly bloom she attends with her whole being; MAXIMAX, photography as an act that awakens the wildness of both photographed and photographer; Gray Zone, the unbearable lightness of beings seen in clones and the grey smoke exhaled by the original; and 1999 Tokyo, human presence distorted by the wavelength of mercury lamps.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
