Photographs of shopping malls by Kei Ono, who since 2002 has photographed high-school students all over Japan for the series The Glare of Youth and NEW TEXT: students who answered his call online and whom he visited in their hometowns, more and more of whom chose a mall as the place to be photographed. From the 2010s he began to photograph malls in earnest, as a way of looking at a changing Japan and at how we live, huge boxes that cover people's desires and differences, and inside them people whose behaviour is continuous with daily life yet slightly floating. Walking all over Japan with a medium-format rangefinder camera and a folding tripod, he found that around each mall new housing, electronics stores, fast-food chains and trucks make up the world we take for granted, a world that even the makers of malls could not have foreseen.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
