Book design by Kensuke Sakakibara (Iroha Design)
Photographs by the Chinese photographer XING Lei, born in the 1990s and working in Nanjing, in which mountains, stones, water, fossils and clocks recur in a dark box that seeks the eternal and that the tide of fragments washes back into: things lost, the cosmos, religion and philosophy, pieces of dreams and journeys. A person rowing a boat under an umbrella, a person playing an instrument toward the river, a person speaking to a lake or stream: scenes made over a long time drifting in the time of the tide, serene and unconnected, suspended, and for that very reason fragmentary and real. Photography, he writes, is an extension of his memory and imagination, a ship that has weathered with time but can still hold him when darkness descends, with the tide of the past spreading out as the camera faces the world. He likes to photograph fragile things, butterflies, plants, ruins, lost people, and is fascinated by the eternal: the moon, rivers, tides, fossils.
