A series of some 100,000 photographs of opaque glass windows in Tokyo, made between April 2020 and November 2022 and Yoshiyuki Okuyama's first work shot on a digital camera; the book collects 724 of them. During the pandemic, when he rarely travelled abroad, he began walking around Tokyo and noticed the windows facing the street, mostly frosted or patterned glass through which everyday things show: kitchens and bathrooms, figurines, flowers, laundry, notices, umbrellas, household altars, bicycles. Cropped along the window frames, the interiors become abstract patterns that carry the shadows and reflections of the outside and suggest the presence of someone living there, each window a portrait of the people of Tokyo. Looking from outside in, a dialogue with strangers, an unspecified portrait that reflects the society at our feet, in a city densely built of different things and constantly generating itself.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
