The American photographer and photography teacher Doug Stewart has left a large cross-section of his photographic work to the FOTOHOF. These are pictures that were taken primarily shortly before and during his stay in Salzburg and his travels in Europe. In the 1970s, Doug Stewart, together with Ina Stegen, founded a highly acclaimed photography workshop program at Salzburg College and was also the first teacher of photography classes at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts Salzburg. Some Salzburg photographers such as Michael Mauracher and Kurt Kaindl attended these courses and gained their knowledge of artistic photography from them and subsequently founded the FOTOHOF. With this first exhibition in the FOTOHOF archive the circle closes.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
