The exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape, which was held in the George Eastman House in Rochester/New York in 1975, is widely regarded as one of the style-defining and most influential in the history of photography. For the German-language stages of the international exhibition tour in Linz and Cologne the “remake” has been complemented not just with contemporary positions but also with an additional publication. This exquisite exhibition guide comprises examples of photographs by all the artists featured at the original exhibition as well as translations of the texts of the English-language catalogue - by Britt Salvesen and Alison Nordström - and an original essay by Gabriele Hofer on the way in which the New Topographics were received in the German-speaking countries. The introduction by William Jenkins, curator of the legendary exhibition, has also been translated into German for the first time. Other photograph contributions are by Thomas Struth, Andreas Gursky, Simone Nieweg, Joachim Brohm, Margherita Spiluttini, Andrew Phelps and Chris Durham.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
