No other Austrian federal state is home to as many Turkish guest workers as a percentage of the total population as Vorarlberg. The question of home and foreign, one's own country and the search for a new place to live arises very directly here. The Vorarlberg photographer Nikolaus Walter asked himself these questions in collaboration with the Turkish translator and poet Kundeyt Surdum. In sensitive and direct reportage photos, Nikolaus Walter follows the everyday life of Turks in Vorarlberg, some of whom have been living here for the second generation. He shows how the tension between cultures manifests itself within the generations and the Turkish population group, but also how a way of life emerges that is very reminiscent of the period of reconstruction in post-war Austria. In addition, a text by Kurt Greussing highlights some important facts and connections between different cultures.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
