Text by Bodo Hell, Kurt Kaindl
After the death of Karl Heinrich Waggerl's wife, a large number of glass negatives and photos were found in his house in Wagrein, which testify to his long-term and intensive involvement with photography. Although Waggerl's diverse interest in handicrafts is already known, the discovery of a substantial photographic work, which is now being published for the first time, came as a surprise. A large part of the work comes from the 20s and 30s and shows Waggerl's engagement with contemporary and sometimes avant-garde tendencies in photographic art. In addition to village scenes and documentation of rural life, there are numerous portraits of women and self-portraits as well as still lifes and productions in the tradition of New Objectivity photography. In his text, the well-known Austrian writer Bodo Hell engages with the photographs of K.H. in an associative and confrontational way. Waggerls apart. The photo historian Kurt Kaindl complements the illustrated book with an essay on the meaning of photography K.H. Waggerls in the context of his time.
