Portraits and daily life at Okinawa Airakuen, the national leprosarium at Nago, recorded in 1975 by the photographer Mikio Suzuki, who went there only a few years after Okinawa's return to Japan. Told by a friend that people there suffered greatly from discrimination and prejudice and that he should photograph in a way that would help rectify it, Suzuki at first could not point his camera at the residents, taking pictures from a distance or from behind, until the words of a resident, which he recorded in his diary, changed this. With discrimination still strong, it was extremely hard for ordinary residents to reveal their faces and names, yet the pictures show people facing loneliness and sorrow while doing their utmost to enrich their lives. The book appeared in 2025, exactly half a century after the shoot.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
