Oshika Kabuki is a local theatre tradition of the village of Oshika in Nagano Prefecture that has lasted more than three hundred years, with a record of a performance in 1767, passed on by the villagers through changing times. Those three hundred years connect to the present but cannot be seen with the eye, and that inspired Masanori Hata to set aside his role as photographer and become the director of the work, returning to the village many times. MIRROR marks the shift from photography of the self to photography of the group: villagers recruited from the community became photographers and models, as actors, backstage staff, spectators and family members, so that the roles of looking and being looked at intersect and the boundary between them is disturbed. Seasonal landscapes, a collapsed cliff and lined-up sandbags, a zero-magnetic-field site and sleeping bats, a mountain where poets' voices echo at night.
