Photographs made on Minami-Daito, a remote island in the Pacific about an hour by propeller plane from Naha. The Russian navy vessel Borodino found the Daito Islands in 1820 and early twentieth-century Western maps showed them as Borodino Island, although the Ryukyu Kingdom had known them since the fifteenth century as Ufuagari-jima, the island at the farthest reaches of the east. People began to live there about 130 years ago and the population has stayed at around a thousand; with no high school, everyone must leave once, yet the number never changes, which means as many people come in as go out. To understand this cycle of water, greenery and people, Hiroki Nakayama walked the island and gave himself over to island time, and met first the freshwater ponds found by the twenty-three pioneers who landed there.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
