Large-scale monograph is devoted to Thomas Ruff’s series titled nudes in which existing imagery is appropriated by downloading generic images from pornographic “thumbnail galleries” on the Internet and then is enlarged, distorted, and transformed. Literally and figuratively blurring the distinctions between pornography and formalist nude photography, Ruff enhances the artificial atmosphere of the tiny “originals” by boosting their image size exponentially. Accompanying the photographs is an excerpt from a novel by French writer Michel Houellebecq.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
