Photographs of home life and trains by Yurie Nagashima, taken with a lightweight easy-focus camera during the twelve years she raised her son largely on her own. In her own text she contrasts the image of the great artist, hauling heavy equipment out beyond the known with animal-like concentration, with a life of breast-feeding every two hours, changing nappies and preparing meals, running on empty after the break-up with her partner. She took the baby everywhere and, on days off, to watch his favourite trains; as he grew he wandered off and she chased after him. Scenes with obstacles in the way, loveable niceties and a peaceable(?) world reflected in a mirror make up the book, which ends as the boy chooses two days at a railroad enthusiast camp over three weeks in Europe with her: change is in the air. Colour pictures of walkways, trees and sky sit beside collaged details on pages of green and white.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
