Photographs made in the Rotorua area, homeland of the indigenous Maori. The area is an active centre of geothermal activity, and its geysers, hot mud pools and other natural features scattered here and there create a surreal scene of wonder. Mikiya Takimoto writes that he felt the pulse of the earth itself and silently released the shutter as if reeling in something buried deep in the labyrinth of his unconscious. Each spread pairs two pictures: pale, bleached views of bare branches against the sky, and paths between green bushes. The red cloth cover has the title and the photographer's name embossed.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
