Twenty-two portraits made on weekends over one month, from 7 September to 6 October 2013, in a temporary studio set up in the basement of the bookstore On Sundays. Kyoji Takahashi recruited his sitters from the general public and in the end photographed 42 people, with the sessions open for anyone to watch. Despite the tension of each session, the atmosphere was pervaded by an intimate relationship between photographer and sitter. Takahashi explains the idea with a joke: after years of selling prints to friends he had run out of customers and thought of opening a gallery, following in the footsteps of Man Ray. The studio interior was designed by HIGASIX. The colour portraits show individuals and pairs, and the cover is blue with the title in tall dark letters.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
