Much reveals itself in the work of Melbourne artist Zoë Croggon: a lucid understanding of the kinetic body and its syntax of gestures, figures that float, curve and drape in an unknowable choreography, and a unique rendition of collage in which a single cut or sculptural fold does the heavy lifting, built on a slow, methodical mining of the archive and a deep reading of art, performance and architectural history. One of the anchors of her work is the literary: her debut book Arc was published by Perimeter Editions in 2015, and she positions her work as an aftereffect of literary engagement. Piecing together works made over eight years, How to Cut an Orange is her new artist's book and embraces the written word more than ever, with an abstracted essay by the young poet Samantha Abdy and poems by her mother, the poet and cultural critic Alison Croggon, placed in direct conversation with her sensuous, visceral photographic collages. The cover is a black-and-white photograph of rippling folds of draped, bodily fabric.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
