Some Voices Carry is Arini Byng's second book with Perimeter Editions, a collection of photo-collages made by layering family snapshots over pages lifted from issues of EBONY magazine, chiefly from 1980, the year her parents met, and 1982, the year they married. Her late father Travis Byng, her best friend and long-time collaborator, appears in several of them, as do her Australian mother Anna, her sister Chren, her cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents in her American family. Bringing family intimacy into dialogue with the editorial and photographic language of EBONY, a Black-owned magazine that shone a light on Black life, culture and social justice, the images work as beacons and also whisper of cultural distance and yearning, since her father's sudden death in 2022 took her primary link to her Black American heritage. The cover is a collage over a JET magazine page with the title in orange capitals across a smiling portrait.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
