Introductory essay by Jim Heimann
Shore Leave is a collection of snapshots from World War II revealing the activities of US Navy personnel on their way to and from the Pacific theatre by way of Hawaii. A tropical paradise filled with beautiful beaches, nubile hula girls and powerful native surfers, as Jim Heimann writes in his introductory essay, Honolulu served as the backdrop for the final moments of freedom before sailors were deposited onto the battlefield. It is the first photobook to capture Honolulu during the Second World War, through a remarkably curated collection of vintage photographs, many of them found in the personal scrapbooks of veterans and gathered by Heimann over the years. The pictures show sailors posing with lei-wearing women for a street photographer, a crowded bar and a hula dancer partnering a sailor.
