Introduction by Jordan Whiteman

Over three years Peter Beste documented the global underground of dungeon synth, a fiercely independent musical subculture rooted in solitude, fantasy and self-made worlds that grew out of the one-man black metal projects of the 1990s. Largely overlooked and rarely photographed, this international network operates outside mainstream visibility, sustained by small-run cassette releases, handmade artwork and tightly held channels of exchange. Moving between intimate portraits and stark, atmospheric landscapes, the images trace the places where the music is made: bedrooms, forests, ruins and imagined realms made tangible through solitude and devotion, from a castle ruin on a cliff to robed figures holding flaming torches and a hooded figure in a forest archway. The result expands beyond music into a broader practice of world-building grounded in isolation and imagination. Edited by Johan Kugelberg, the book places dungeon synth within a lineage of underground cultural production where anonymity, self-sufficiency and resistance to scale are defining principles, and marks the fifth collaboration between Beste and Kugelberg.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
