Catalogue of the landmark exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington in 1985, curated by Rosalind Krauss and Jane Livingston, which re-examined the role of photography in the Surrealist movement. Taking its title from André Breton's book on mad love, it brings together the photographs of Man Ray, Brassaï, Hans Bellmer, Raoul Ubac, Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Georges Hugnet, Paul Nougé and Breton himself, with essays by Krauss and Livingston and a text by Dawn Ades. It treats Surrealist photography as a field of its own, from the spontaneous image and the found object to the distortion of the body and the doll.
