The French edition of Die Puppe, published in Paris two years after the German original by the poet-printer Guy Lévis Mano, with Bellmer's introduction translated by Robert Valençay. It presents ten photographs of the artificial girl with multiple anatomical possibilities that Bellmer had constructed in Berlin in 1933, a doll assembled and photographed in stages, and it carried the work to the Parisian Surrealists, who had already seen it in the pages of Minotaure. The book is a small, fragile object printed in a limited edition, one of the founding documents of Surrealist photography and of the doll theme in Bellmer's work.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
