Grand Circle Diego is the debut photobook by French photographer Cyril Costilhes—a dark, visceral exploration of family tragedy, memory, and personal catharsis.

Built on deep, lush blacks, direct flash, overexposed highlights, and heavy vignetting, the imagery creates an unsettling visual tunnel. The sequence unfolds without captions, pulling the reader through a haunting parade of shadows, tropical foliage, desolate landscapes, and quiet eroticism.

Only at the end do three brief diary notes reveal the backstory: Costilhes’ father moved to Madagascar to run a casino, chasing a post-colonial paradise, before a horrific motorcycle accident left him in a coma for over a decade. Costilhes traveled to the island to face his father's ghosts, seeking to "turn the ugly into beautiful" through his camera.

The title references the father’s casino, but the "circle" extends to the book's motif—recurring loops of blood, shadow, and nature, anchored by an image of a flower-like internal organ on both covers. With its Bible-like leatherette spine and flat-lay black spreads, Grand Circle Diego is an atmospheric, deeply moving act of visual healing that leaves its central mystery intact.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
