Text: Maia Nuku (Evelyn A. J. Hall and John A. Friede Curator for Oceanic Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
Brief interview with artist, with translations in language

This volume traces the work of Marrnyula Munuŋgurr, a Yolŋu woman, senior artist, and printmaker who has been working as part of the Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre in Yirrkala, Arnhem Land, since the 1980s. Raised in a family of prolific artists, she is perhaps best known for her vast installations of meticulously painted and arranged small barks. In 2020, she won the bark painting category of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards.

The book traces both Munuŋgurr's artworks and documentation of her life on country. It features a major text by leading scholar and curator Maia Nuku, Evelyn A. J. Hall and John A. Friede Curator for Oceanic Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and a brief interview with the artist that is also translated into language.

KNOWN is a series of publications that promotes and celebrates contemporary Indigenous Australian artists, facilitating cross-cultural dialogue between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and writers. KNOWN elevates and amplifies First Nations voices; strengthening cultural knowledge, language, and artistic engagement.

The KNOWN series is designed to foster knowledge exchange within communities and acknowledges contemporary Indigenous Australian artists on both national and international stages.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
