Myths and traumas are the building blocks of collective consciousness: canonised narratives create identities and affiliations, and divisions between us and others. This researched and visually dense work explores Finnish war remembrance and sums up its essence in the title. Visual culture serves as a means of imagining and identifying with past conflict, and a central theme is the relationship between willing conviction and inherited ideals, and the moral friction they contain. Photographs and archival material are brought together so that collective and personal memories meet on the same page.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
