Laia Abril visualises the origin of gender-based stereotypes and myths, together with the failing structures of law and order that continue to perpetuate a culture of sexual violence. She collates and interweaves compiled testimonies, political proclamations, historical archives, popular and traditional beliefs, and the structural failures of society in dealing with sexual violence. To avoid feeding a systemic victim-blaming society, the visual narrative switches from the survivors to the bodies that should protect them, allowing her to address transgenerational trauma and social accountability. It is the second chapter of the long-term project A History of Misogyny, a visual research through historical and contemporary comparisons of the systemic control of women in the world.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
