The first book by the artist, film-maker and writer RaMell Ross brings together his large-format pictures, sculptures, conceptual works and writing on the American South. "I may pay rent to a friend for my place in Greensboro, but the South's my landlord; and I'm trapped in its stomach trying to get to its brain." Made in Hale County, Alabama, the work folds photography into a dictionary of terms, gestures and histories that describe Black life in the region and the difficulty of picturing it.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
