Each year during the dry season Huichol families from the Sierra Madre in Nayarit leave their communities to work as day labourers growing, cutting and harvesting tobacco on the northern coast of the state, in Mexico. Most travel with their entire family — pregnant women, children and newborns included — and working the tobacco fields means constant contact with pesticides and fertilisers, a risk that affects every worker and the indigenous families most of all.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
