Mnemosyne Grove, the debut book from London-based Australian artist Georgia Metaxas, traverses the territory of memory, lineage and loss with great sensitivity and poeticism. Using the olive tree as its central motif, the project explores family lineage and tragedy through connections between land, family archives and storytelling, reflecting on the photograph's ability to provide a nexus for multiple personal histories — in particular, those of migration, displacement, loss and return. The book connects two sites of particular familial significance in Greece, with Metaxas journeying between an olive grove in Palairos bequeathed to her mother's family — where the ancient trees, each named after a woman in the maternal line, have stood for five hundred years — and Ithaca, the island where her father's family originated before migrating to Australia in 1901. That Metaxas's young father would tragically die during their family trip to Greece casts this work in the most poignant of lights.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
