Yoshinori Saito lives in Hokkaido, the northernmost part of Japan, where winter is long and snow falls on and off for some four months. Once the storm has passed and the endless white has settled, what remains is purity, calm and silence. Walking on the fresh snow the photographer notices unusual shapes in the distance: only weeds, their stalks broken and leaves fallen, reduced to a skeletal form that reads black against the white like a drawing. In that moment he feels a deep connection with the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido.
